Juventus and Massimiliano Allegri have decided to terminate the contract of their former head coach by mutual agreement, the Serie A club said on Monday.

The 56-year-old was dismissed in May over his behaviour during and after the Coppa Italia final in which he was sent off as Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0 to win a record-extending 15th Italian Cup.

Allegri earned a red card in stoppage time for sarcastically applauding the referee when he grew angry at a decision and ripped off his jacket. Italian media reported that Allegri was also aggressive toward journalists after the match.

Juventus said in a statement that Allegri’s behavior was not in line with their “values.”

Allegri was Juventus’ coach for eight years over two spells, from 2014-2019 and 2021-2024, leading the team to five Serie A titles, five Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups.

“Juventus Football Club and Massimiliano Allegri can confirm that they have mutually agreed to terminate his contract at the end of the current season,” Juventus said in a statement.

“The club would like to thank Massimiliano Allegri for the results achieved during his years in charge of the team and wishes him the best for his professional future.”

The Italian club appointed Paolo Montero, who coaches the under-19s team, to take charge of the remainder of their 2023-24 Serie A campaign.

The 52-year-old won four Serie A titles with Juventus during his time as a player between 1996 and 2005.

On June 1, Juventus began the process of rejoining the European Club Association, after withdrawing from plans to form a European Super League.
