‘New doubt over Letby guilt’ and ‘crackdown on AI child abuse’

The Sunday Mirror front page

A variety of stories feature on the front pages of the Sunday papers. The Sunday Mirror leads with the story that the government is introducing new laws to tackle the threat of child sexual abuse images generated by artificial intelligence (AI). It says Labour vowed to crackdown on the content after an increase in cases of more than 300% in 2024 when compared to the previous year, a figure produced by the Internet Watch Foundation.

The Mail on Sunday front page

The Mail on Sunday splashes with what is says is a “bombshell revelation” that could suggest “the jury was misled over key evidence”. The story claims that when suspicious incidents at the Countess of Chester Hospital were originally being looked into, it was found that Letby was off duty for ten of them, out of 28. In a statement, Cheshire Police said that it’s the families affected in the case and “the ongoing investigations that remain our primary focus”.

Sunday Express front page

“Keir edging us back into the EU”, leads the Sunday Express. The paper writes that the PM is due to attend a dinner with European Union leaders on Monday, stoking fears among Brexiteers that Sir Keir will discuss “major concessions” that will turn the UK into a “serf of the EU”.

The Observer front page

The Observer’s top story is about a “high-risk gambler” who was sent 1,300 personalised marketing emails by Sky Betting & Gaming over a period of two years, with the man’s gambling habits were used to unlawfully target him without proper consent – with pressure on the firms to reform their advertising practices. Flutter, which bought Sky Betting & Gaming in 2020, said it had made “significant changes” since the claimant’s experience, but fundamentally disagreed with the judgment and was considering an appeal.

The Sunday Times front page

The Sunday Times reports that China considered the Duke of York a “valuable communication channel”, according to court documents. The paper says that the newly-released files suggest MI5 questioned Prince Andrew’s most senior aide over the Prince’s relationship with alleged spy Yang Tengbo.

The Sunday Telegraph front page

The Sunday Telegraph leads with the governments plans to reverse legislation used to block illegal migrants from obtaining British citizenship. The paper says that the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill revealed Labour’s plans to overturn laws put into place by the previous Conservative government, which also meant asylum seekers could be made to undergo scientific age checks.

The Sun on Sunday front page

“You Traitor” splashes The Sun on Sunday, with the story that Traitors winner Jake Brown was confronted by his wife after meeting with a female work colleague several times.

The Sunday Telegraph says the government is watering down laws which were introduced by the Conservatives to prevent migrants arriving in small boats obtaining citizenship. It says the small print of a border security bill published last week shows the measures are being repealed, along with a rule that anyone refusing to submit to scientific age checks will be classed as an adult. Government sources argued the Tories had made “such a mess” of introducing the powers, that they were never used. The paper’s editorial says scrapping them is a “retrograde step”. The Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Philp, calls the action a total capitulation to people smugglers.

With Sir Keir Starmer preparing for a summit with EU leaders this week, several papers consider whether he should face towards Brussels or Washington. The Sun on Sunday wants the UK to be “straining every sinew to strike a trade deal with a booming US” instead of “cosying up with the floundering EU”. The Telegraph says if the Prime Minister can capitalise on Donald Trump’s affection for this country, and use the freedom for manoeuvre provided by Brexit to strike a US trade deal, “we may even emerge ahead”.

Lucy Letby killed babies while working in the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit

The Mail on Sunday says police notes on the Lucy Letby case have raised new doubt about her guilt.

The nurse was jailed for murdering seven babies, and trying to murder seven more.

But The Mail on Sunday says the previously undisclosed documents raise “serious questions” about whether the jury was misled, because they say she was off duty for a third of the deaths.

The Sunday Times has spoken to an expert who believes his research was “misused” to convict her and will this week publicly challenge how his work was presented.

It says Dr Shoo Lee is preparing to make “a significant intervention” in her case, by presenting a new review of all the deaths on behalf of Letby’s legal team.

The Observer says Rachel Reeves is facing criticism after it was confirmed that a report she cited as support for a third runway at Heathrow was commissioned by the airport.

During her speech in Oxford about growth, the Chancellor quoted the report by Frontier Economics as saying the project could increase potential GDP. The firm says its work was entirely independent and unbiased.

The Sunday Times reveals that Kensington Palace will no longer release details of the outfits worn by the Princess of Wales, when she carries out engagements.

A source tells the paper Catherine wants to focus on issues, rather than style. The Mail on Sunday says the news will inevitably cause “dismay”, and asks “isn’t there room for both?”

But the former editor of Vogue, Alexandra Shulman, weighs in on the Princesses’ side in the paper, saying “the royals are not paid to be mannequins”.

Catherine has today issued a call for society to prioritise social and emotional skills for children. The Sunday Mirror seizes on that, calling her “a breath of fresh air in an increasingly unkind world”.
