For King Charles III it will be a moment steeped in tradition and ceremony. He’ll arrive at the Houses of Parliament from his gilded horse-drawn carriage, don his crown and sit on the throne. From there he will read out the speech prepared for him by his new government listing all of the legislation it intends to pass.
As deputy political editor Jessica Elgot tells Hannah Moore, it will be a milestone for Keir Starmer’s administration and a statement of intent for a government determined to “move fast and fix things” after 14 years of Conservative rule.
With a huge parliamentary majority, Labour should have no trouble passing the roughly 35 bills expected to be announced. But money is still tight and the business of government is far more complex than simply passing legislation.
