The reservoir is set to go up for auction

The turquoise waters of a scenic reservoir that went viral on social media during the Covid pandemic are once again for sale.

Brombil Reservoir in Margam, Neath Port Talbot, was bought in February for £15,000 and put back up for sale an hour later for £30,000.

The deep colliery on Margam Mountain, which was flooded in the 19th century, is now up for sale once again – listed by SDL Property Auctions, featuring a one-acre reservoir and two acres of countryside.

The auctioneers said visitors call it a “blue lagoon”, suggesting the property could host an outdoor activities business if given planning permission.

“With its intensely turquoise water, set amid the rural greenery of Margam Mountain, Brombil Reservoir is a truly stunning man-made lake,” said auctioneer Andrew Parker.

The guide price is at between £20,000 and £25,000.

Viewings entail a a 900m (2,953ft) walk down a public footpath, the only access to the site’s blue waters, which are more than 30m (100 feet) deep.

It also comes with liabilities, including having a structural surveyor’s report to be done ever ten years because the reservoir sits above residential properties, according to a previous seller Watts & Morgan estate agents.

The beauty spot went viral on social media during 2021 when an influx of visitors caused traffic chaos and major litter problems.

Nearby residents claimed they had been “suffering” because of the problems and eventually Neath Port Talbot council asked visitors to stay away.

A TikTok video from an account highlighting “UK hidden gems” received more than one million views on a video featuring the reservoir in 2022.

“A reservoir certainly isn’t for everyone,” Mr Parker said.

“But we are excited to see what happens on the day of the auction and what imaginative plans a new owner might have for this hidden Welsh gem.”
