Wrexham made progress in their hunt for automatic promotion from League One on Saturday as they moved into second place with a 1-0 win over 10-man Stockport County.

Wrexham are bidding for a remarkable third straight promotion this season, and Jay Rodríguez’s first-half strike was enough to earn all three points and keep up the fight for a place in the Championship.

The Welsh side were awarded a penalty before the half-hour mark after Ibou Touray was penalised for a handball. Rodriguez stepped up to take the penalty and saw his attempt saved by goalkeeper Corey Addai, although the forward netted the rebound — his first goal for the club since joining in January.

Stockport pushed for an equaliser, almost coming when a Callum Connolly header forced Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo into a superb save, but couldn’t find it. Things went from bad to worse for Stockport when Brad Hills was shown a second yellow card on 81 minutes.

Wrexham face a near-impossible task to reel in leaders Birmingham City, who are nine points clear with two games in hand. Their best chance of promotion will be through finishing second.

Wycombe Wanderers, who are in third place, are three points behind Wrexham with a game in hand.
